China Daily quoted experts’ comments as pointing out a number of factors that caused the Gansu earthquake to cause large casualties.
First, earthquakes occur at night when many people are sleeping, making detection and evacuation difficult.
Third, the area where the earthquake occurred is a densely populated place.
`The population in areas near the epicenter is quite dense,` he said.
The seismic intensity of the earthquake near the epicenter is currently estimated to be level 8, with level 12 being the strongest.
According to Chen, while buildings in some metropolises such as Beijing are designed and built to withstand high-intensity earthquakes, many homes in the affected areas of Gansu and Qinghai are not.
`The epicenter of the earthquake was shallow. This was also the factor that caused widespread damage,` he added.
In an interview with China News Service, Gao Mengtan, an expert at the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration, said that the December 18 earthquake in Gansu, although not of great intensity, had
