According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Winston Yep, an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, on October 26 testified in court about the arrest of Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer.
Ms. Manh Van Chu was arrested by Canadian authorities at Vancouver airport at the end of 2018 at the request of the US.
`We don’t know for sure who she was with and what she might have done,` Mr. Yep said, emphasizing that there were other passengers on the flight and that the police had not arrested Ms. Manh because of concerns.
This police officer said that the US side requested to confiscate Ms. Manh’s electronic device and put it in a specialized bag to avoid the risk of the device’s content being remotely deleted.
However, Ms. Manh’s lawyer, Mr. Richard Peck, said that the arrest, interrogation and confiscation of Ms. Manh Van Chu’s electronic devices and personal data by Canadian customs officials was part of an investigation.
Mr. Yep is the first of 10 witnesses to participate in the trial at the British Columbia Superior Court in two sessions lasting from now until the end of November. The first session took place this week with 5 witnesses.
Previous evidence showed that Canadian customs officials detained Ms. Meng for at least 3 hours, confiscated electronic devices and questioned about Huawei’s business relationship with Iran without giving a reason.
Ms. Meng and Huawei have repeatedly denied this allegation.
